New year! New you!” We’ve heard that phrase so many time before, but what does it mean to you? I was dining in at a chicken restaurant and I realized this week there have been way more traffic at my favorite chicken spot. I thought maybe school is out and the kids being out for the holidays are driving in more traffic. Until I started talking to the person next to me and she told me that this is her last “fast food” meal she’ll be eating for a whole year. She told me her New Year’s goal is to get in shape and that involves not eating out at fast food chicken restaurants. She went on to tell me that since she cannot eat fast food all next year, she was going to spend the last week of 2021 eating all the junk she can handle.

It then dawned on me that perhaps that was the reason for an uptake in patrons at lunch time. People are eating out during the last week of 2021, because they plan on dieting and exercising in 2022. The thought of waiting in line to use weights at the gym and packed-out salad bars in January immediately rushed through my mind.

But on second thought, perhaps self-evaluation once a year is better than none. For some this means “showtime”. For many people working out it’s an adrenaline pump, but for others its vanity. Looking good is just as important as feeling good. Just go to your local gym and you’ll find people wearing the latest fitness apparel from brands like Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, etc. Not just the latest clothes, but also the latest in duffel bags and other sport gears. Sometimes, you can even tell how serious someone is about fitness based on the gear they have. People just don’t want to look and feel good internally, but also physically as well. That involves not only taking care of the body but also making sure they got the right gear for their workout as well.
